Druid shillelagh3/24/2023 And their damage isn't that much better than using Cantrips that scale (which Shillelagh sadly doesn't). Their HP and AC are just too low to support you going full melee. They need a full turn to get online, or two if you want to throw out a spell like Entangle first. So you could use TWF and apply the benefit of the Dual Wielder Feat.īut the apes you can turn into as a non-Moon Druid just aren't worth it. You retain your mental stats, proficiencies and class features. The ape form has hands and is able to use tools with them. You can cast Shillelagh and Wild Shape on the same turn. What do you think? am I crazy? How would you rule at your table? Why? ![]() ![]() And TBF, trying to squeak in an extra shillelagh attack as a Druid is going a bit far. or would rule Shillelagh fizzles when a druid wild shapes. On the other hand, I imagine there are DM's who wouldn't allow an Ape to weild a club because it's a beast. Interestingly, without shillelagh an Ape using a club to make two attacks would see the damage dice drop from a d6 to a d4 - so the fist multiattack is clearly the better option w/o Shillelagh and remains better in most situations w/ it. Still, a Druid as an Ape wailing with a set of clubs seems pretty cool thematically, and makes logical sense being that the creature can already make two fist attacks. that they can maintain shillelagh if they want and the Ape can make two club attacks, one being an offhand attack not with the Shillelagh. Id likely tell a player at my table trying to do this that it's either two fists as normal or a club w/ shillelagh and an offhand club attack. I'm not sure I see the Rules that way, even if as a player Id love to get two attacks with shillelagh and an offhand strike. This could see an Ape make two Shillelagh'd attacks via Multiattack and a bonus action off hand attack (1d8+4, 1d8+4 & 1d4 or 11-28dmg if all hit). Of course, a super generous DM might let the Ape keep its multiattack with a shillelagh'd club and/or also allow two weapon fighting. except maybe if an enemy is resistant to nonmagical damage and you're not a Moon Druid with magical animal strikes. Doesn't seem worth it in terms of raw damage potential. I presume weilding a club replaces the fist attack and this costs the Ape its multiattack (which specifically calls for two Fist attacks), so tacticly this trades two full attacks (1d6+3 twice or 8-18dmg if both hit) for 1 magical and 1 mundane off hand attack (1d8+4 & 1d4 or 6-16dmg, assuming +4 Wis Mod). If yes and yes and yes, can the Ape form dual weild two clubs in combat, with proficiency, and have one of them be a magical shillelagh until that minute runs out? If yes and yes, can an Ape use a club as a weapon and does the Ape form inherit the Druids class proficiency with clubs and the Two Weapon Fighting feat from the character? ![]() Walk through it with me:Ĭan a Druid use a bonus action to cast shillelagh on a club (1 minute duration) and use their action to wild shape into an ape without letting it go in a single turn? Does Shillelagh maintain effect on the weapon for the full duration as normal? Here's the scenario framed as a series of rules questions. I'm well aware this gets into pushing the RAW a bit, but wild shape will often do that. Can a Druid wild shaped into an Ape use Clubs in combat? Can one be a Shillelagh?Įvery rules question is answered by the DM at the table, but I'm curious how other DM's might rule or see this tactic.
